The Kashin and Kotlin Class guided missile destroyers Admiral Vinogradov and Admiral Pantaleyev were docked in the naval shipyards to the north of
Josef Gorovic the senior marine electrical engineer had one task to finish before he left the shipyards and returned home to his wife and family. He had one hour to finish calibrating the gyro-electric compass for the Surface to Air SA-N-9 Gauntlet Missile guidance systems, and he had to complete the work on the two destroyers that night; or sail with the ships and complete the work at sea. That was not a scenario he welcomed.
He quickly set the automatic calibrator equipment and squeezed into the confined space that housed the Gyro systems control centre. He carefully connected the calibrator to the system and switched on. First a red light showed, then a green one to show that the Gyro Compass had been re-set. He disconnected his equipment and proceeded to the second destroyer and duplicated the process there.
It was two days before he discovered a one-degree error in the calibrator. That one degree had been transferred to both the destroyers’ Gyro Compass’s for the weapons control systems; it was now too late to do anything about it as both ships were now at sea. They had sailed south the previous day to take up station with the rest of the Russian Fleet, patrolling the narrow entrance to the
