About the Book

Dear Homemakers and Friends,

The idea for the suggestion in this book came from both of my previous restaurants, my home catering experiences, and my weekend home entertainment for my friends and their friends.  Some of the recipes were collected in my travels and some come from my friends and relatives’ kitchens.

[Restaurant Experience]   Jo’ Deans Cuisine: Sacramento, California 1979

Jo’Deans Cuisine 2: Mt. Vernon, New York 1986

[Home catering experience]  Exquisite Dining: Weekend Home Entertainment

                                                                              Sacramento, California 1982

Finding my weekend home entertainment so successful and enjoyable, I decided to compile these suggestions and hints and share them with you.  This book is presented to all:  the homemaker, the professional who has rigid time restraints, but who cares about good food and entertainment, and the novice who needs a bit more confidence in putting on an affair.

The most difficult thing I thought about when putting this book together was the task of what to put in and what to leave out.  Everything seemed so important, so I included some of my favorite recipes and hope they appeal to all (including my friends who say the presentation for entertainment at home makes them nervous.)

We come to a certain time in our lives when entertaining at home rivals the theater, ball games, movies, bowling, and most activities for our attention.  So, we should be prepared for it, as it is the most important of all activities carried out in an intimate gathering of our friends, co-workers and family, who we want to spend quality time with.

When one acquires a book like this, it is not to teach you to cook, but how to make the occasion fit the situation.  Precisely, you will find some illustrations showing how to decorate a table, how to serve a tasty, easily prepared menu, with not a lot of French names and other unfamiliar descriptions.  It is meant to teach you how to put together a small, simple meal that is self-satisfying and also calls for the admiration of your friends.

Cooking is fun, and to be creative with it is much more fun and rewarding.  Food is not just nourishment for the body; it can create an environment in which good conversation, friendship, and romance flourish.

About the Author

Hazel Smith is an entrepreneur who has had several businesses spanning from California, to Georgia where she now resides.

She has owned and operated three restaurants.  Two in California, (where she started writing this book), and one in New York (where she finished the book). She claims not to be a chef or a writer, just a small businessperson.

Before retiring two years ago she wondered what was her God given purpose and what she could do for her fellowman. She remembered that while as a youngster studying nursing in England, she wanted to open a home for young unmarried mothers, which she did not pursue at the time. Now, research has led her to the needs of neglected, abandoned and abused children where she is focusing her attention. As a result Miriam’s Sanctuary was formed and incorporated in 2000.

Since then she has been trying desperately to purchase a small building to start a vocational training center, but have been unable to, for the lack of funding. She has donated her boutique, have decided to publish this book

and donate all proceeds toward getting the center started.

She believes that when the Lord touches the heart of someone to purchase this book, they are passing the blessings on in helping some unfortunate child to survive.
