In Our Beginning

            Anna Wingert was born in Pennsylvania on May 28, 1787; the “Constitution of the United States of America” was signed on September 17, 1787; and, just as the “US Constitution” was one of our nation's founding documents, Anna Wingert was one of my family's founding matriarchs. “She was a very spiritual woman. She lived a victorious life and had a glorious homecoming. During her last illness, her constant communion was with the Lord,”declares my family's records!                                                                                                

            Anna died on July 2, 1871; in 1871 the President of Princeton, Charles Hodge, essentially argued that we are a Christian nation as fact, and, that fact cannot die…Well Anna did die but her seed continues.  Charles Hodge’s assertion that we are to be governed on Christian principals did die, but his words of truth continue. Anna was my great, great, great, great grandmother. She married John Hoover and my known history thus began. John and Anna welcomed their son Michael into this world in 1822 and in God’s good hour Michael and Susan welcomed their son Daniel in 1847.

            My family's history is one of lives built on grit and determination in a nation that tried her children’s resolve but rewarded her own with real hope and dreams fulfilled for themselves and their future generations. Daniel Hoover married and had five children. His wife died, so what did hard working fathers do in the early 1880’s to keep the candle lit in a recently restructured land near the bloody battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania? They remarried.

            Fannie Rebecca Brindle was either full-blooded Indian or half. She caught Daniel’s eye and the two of them became one; they married and our journey continued. Seth was one of eleven or twelve children bore by Fannie; he was my great grandfather. If my memory serves me right, I was told by my grandmother that he went to work for the railroad at the going rate of four cents an hour. This was how our Christian nation was built. You can disagree if you like but we were stitched together with the threads of God’s robe by great men like our founding fathers and men like my great grandfather Seth.             After Seth retired from the railroad he went into business with a half brother from his father’s first marriage as a tinsmith. His brother lived about three blocks from him and they set up shop in his backyard garage. Seth was the mechanic and his brother was the bookkeeper; this would have been during WWII into the early 50’s.
