I struggled with suicidal ideation, sleepless nights, and racing thoughts before I was taken to a doctor for an evaluation. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a chemical imbalance in the brain: a condition not fully known but true in existence, then prescribed Lithium and Prozac. Although I regularly took medications, my thoughts of suicide remained severe. I suffered with manic and depressive episodes and experienced multiple episodes within a single week, or even within a single day. Medication adjustments and therapy were often suggested, but rarely followed-up, allowing my condition to go relatively untreated. I visited my doctor every three months, and he adjusted my meds on one occasion. My mother outright refused to take me to a therapist. The doctor told me the meds will eventually work and your mother will come to understand the importance of therapy.

Questioning Faith
In the end, where does the spirit go?
Will it be trapped between
The heaven and earth?
Possibly buried in form of dust
Long before creation or birth?
Perhaps left to crackle in
The burning inferno of hell.
Sizzling—
Beware of the devil’s tale.
Does the soul soar with
Mixed emotions that cave in?
Capturing the separation
Of the body from sin?
Does it hint of sweet honeysuckle
Swaying in the breeze
Or stench as the corroded remains unfold?
Reeking—
Life’s lessons untold.
A committal from ashes to ashes;
Sputtered from heat.
Dust to dust,
Absorbed beneath.
Oh, I pray and long to know
Of anywhere in the end
Does the spirit go.

About the Book
Saudia is abused by her mother and raped by a neighbor and her mother’s live in boyfriend. She struggles with mood swings, racing thoughts, suicide attempts, and the desire to leave home.
The travels of her journey were immoral and fell short to be protected by those nearby. Therefore, the stress of her youth brought about her symptoms of bipolar disorder that would remain embedded in her creative mind.
This novel takes you through the ups and downs of bipolar disorder and the adversity of child abuse. Human Pendulum also contains several poems written by the author.
About the Author
Vivian Terry Cunningham was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She attended Temple University and Peirce College where she received her degree in paralegal studies. She was a corporate paralegal for many years. She is married and has two children and a stepdaughter.Human Pendulum also contains several poems written by the author. This is her first novel.
