Prologue
I looked through the trees in front of me and saw the word, “Prayer.”
I looked at a tree. It wasn’t praying. It was doing its tree thing; it was being a tree. It wasn’t trying to be something else. It wasn’t trying to do something else. It wasn’t concerned about what might happen. It was just being. It wasn’t praying. Neither were the animals.
“It is a human occupation.”
It is our only occupation. Every time we walk across the room, we are praying. Every day that we go to school or go to work, we are praying. Every time we reach for something beyond where we are standing right now, we are praying.
We are doing more than hoping. We are walking towards the goal. We are moving. We are breathing the goal. We are feeling it and wishing we could manifest it in our hands right now so we could touch it and kiss it and hold onto it and know, at last, we had it.
We are all living our prayers. We are walking and talking our prayers. We are crying and laughing until we get to the heart of the prayer; the straight, narrow path—the groove of our own prayer.
When I am walking down this path through the trees, when I am studying for a test and writing an essay, I am praying so hard. When I am cutting carrots for soup and breaking the parsley to throw into the pot, I am silently praying “Make this soup a good one.” With my green parsley and my orange carrots and my silver pot filled with water and salt, I am praying.
When I tie my shoes in the morning and know I am going to work or school, I am praying. When I shop for food, bathe myself, write the bills, blow my nose, I am praying.
The deepest prayer of all is to please keep me alive so I can continue to pray. Please be gentle with me so I don’t bump into too many walls along the path.
I am resigned to being a fool anyway; a stumbling, bumbling human, groping, for the most part, in the dark. Just please don’t let me break anything important.
I am praying as I love you. I am praying as you love me. When we kiss, we pray together.
I look through the trees and finish wondering why I don’t have the answers. But then I realize that I do, and that this is the answer: no one has the answers. No one has the answers.
We are all just praying. We are doing our deepest, best prayer--the best one we can think of.
We can't do better than that.

Louise Teresa StrongBear, a.k.a. Louisa the psychic, reads tarot cards and medicine cards, works with angels, power animals and the other side, writes comedy and eats chocolate every single day of her life. She loves the beach, reads about 100 books a year (she just added it up in her head), and her favorite color is yellow. Her favorite drinks are black coffee, red wine, and ice cold water.
