In every culture, there are different ways in which preparations are made for the arrival of a newborn baby. One task that all have to deal with is that of naming the child. We will not be able to examine each culture. However, we will review a few ethnic groups and their tradition.
The Dangers of Choosing The Wrong Name
Proverbs 18:21 says, "The power of life and death is upon the tongue". Thank God for His word. One would expect the power of life and death to lie in the bullet of a 9mm gun or a sword. However, the Word of God says, "The power of life and death is upon the tongue".
Many children have had their destinies distorted, diverted and destroyed because of their names! When one’s name is erroneous, it conflicts with one’s purpose. If there is conflict with one’s purpose, it is impossible for one to live a fulfilled life.
When God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, Abraham’s life changed. His purpose changed. His destiny changed. The blessings of God upon his life changed. God’s promises to Abraham changed. God’s covenant with him changed. Everything about Abraham changed! If Abraham’s name had nothing to do with his journey in life, his name would have remained the same. However, Jehovah God knows that one’s name is connected to one’s destiny! Hallelujah.
When the God of Heaven is ready to change the course of a man or woman’s life, He commences by changing the name that individual is called. Why? Along with every name comes a calling.

And because of the power of the tongue, that child is being prophesied to each time the name is called. As kids, we used to say that “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”. However, as we grow older, we realize that this saying is very far from the truth. So God’s Word is true; The power of life and death is in the tongue. Therefore, the choice of names for our children may impact their journey in life more than we can imagine!
In today’s society, choosing a child’s name has become as simple as taking polls from friends and associates, or merging portions of two names. In fact, some parents would just give a child a name simply because it sounds cute! Sadly, many children (and parents alike) do not even know the meaning of their names. And The Baby’s Name Is…. enlightens one on how to carefully and diligently handle the task of selecting a child’s name. A name is powerful. A good and godly name is even more powerful.
