For many years I delayed even attempting to approach publishers with this book for three reasons. 1) I never expected to find a publisher who would have the courage to release it. 2) Most of the present methods for the treatment of alcoholism have reputedly been devised by the most qualified people. 3) The public has been conned, lied to, and so many myths and cover-ups have been created in regards to alcoholic beverages by the alcoholic beverage companies, the advertising agencies, the Federal Government and the medical society, I felt that it would be presumptuous for a layman to assume that anything he had to say on the subject would be taken seriously.
However, the facts show, and statistics prove, that few of the methods of treatment the so-called experts have come up with have succeeded in either curtailing the escalation of alcoholism or increasing the incident of recovery from the disease. And while the true facts concerning the dangers of alcohol and alcoholism are readily available to anyone who will take the time to look for them, the powerful alcoholic beverage business lobbyists, the advertising business, the publishing business and news media make these facts known in such a subtle manner, they have no impact on society as a whole. We have seen in recent years the birth of a multibillion-dollar alcoholic treatment business that has, thus far, failed to do much other than make a lot of people rich. Therefore, I decided to make my contribution to try and help solve this problem with only my own experience, research and the truth as credentials.
This book is the result of over thirty-one years of personal experience as a sober responsible person, after having been an irresponsible drunk, and a great deal of thought and research. I have had hundreds of gut-level conversations with people of every race, creed and color from all walks of life whose lives, in some way, have been dramatically affected because they, or a family member, or a close friend, or a business partner, or a valued employee became either a problem drinker or an alcoholic.
