About the Book

A YOUNG LADY ACCOUNTANT, KATE CAMPBELL< ON ASSIGNMENT to assist in an audit at the Mercier Manor in North Carolina, clashes immediately with the manager of the estate. His abrupt, rude, opinionanted manner makes her determined to show him she is expert enough to count cows and inventory farm equipment as well as the treasures inside the castle. Everyone is on edge because several items have disappeared and thievery is suspected. During inventory, Kate learns that additional pieces are missing. She makes friends with the people on the office staff and also with Pietro, the nine-year-old heir to the Mercier fortune, and his friend Steve. When the accountants' work requires them to stay longer than expected, they are invited to attend the annual Symphony Ball benefit. The day after the ball, Kate sees a thief leaving the castle, and the two boys disappear. All of Kate's friends on the Castle staff are under suspicion. Pietro's divorced mother and father, Elaine Mercier Barbarini, and Paolo Barbarini, a symphony orchestra conductor, arrive at the castle, along with his great-grandfather, General George Mercier, a wealthy financier. The ensuing crisis reveals the true character of all the people at the Mercier Manor. Many people will enjoy meeting a small group of Southerners (accountants, cowboys, a castle stewardess, an excellent chef, secretaries, a college student/cleaning lady, a sheriff, a loving mother, and the handsome descendant in a dangerous plot. Southerners, especially, will feel a kinship with the people in Castle in the Carolinas and will be drawn to learn what happened to them as they experienced love and danger in 1983
