Working at Donte Hospital, wasn’t an easy task. We received children daily on the unit. Most of them were children of the streets who had been killed in gang wars, or ones who had suffered from traumatic abuse. Innocent children confused lonely and victims. A child had been shot to death in an alley over a sweater. His body lay cold on a metal slab. As I look at his body, I saw pain past his gunshot wounds.
His legs were scarred, welts maybe two months old. On his ribs were burns from hair curlers, or some kind of hot rod. There were a lot of sores and cuts on his feet and hands. As I turned the child’s body over I saw four healed stab wounds. The child had obviously been abused and or a victim of the street.
Once we established identification on the child, the story became clearer. He was abused. Social services information read the child had been admitted to the hospital numerous times for abuse issues. Most of the wounds afflicted were from his parents. Social Services would take him out of the home and return him in a short period of time. He was a young runaway barely twelve years old. Forced out on the streets, escaping a home he feared even more came to a deadly end.
His final visit to the hospital would be to the morgue. Though his problems and worries were over, I could not help but to think about what he would have become, had not death found him on the streets.

In my recent expedition, to end the cycles of abuse, I have talked to many victims and survivors of abuse pertaining to the ongoing abuse epidemic. Some have shared there stories, others have enjoyed reading and listening to views of abuse from other survivors.
