Ask yourself a simple question: “What’s normal in my life?” Did your answer consider items such as your physical appearance? Your family? Your clothes? Your musical tastes? Your job? Your diet? Your vehicle? Your pets? Your beliefs? A combination of factors? If these are the types of items you evaluated, you’re typical. We’ve all gone through the exercise of questioning whether we fit society’s standards at some point. The problem is that most people do not have a firm understanding of how to determine what, precisely, is normal.
Our instinct is to look to the world around us. We look routinely to and are influenced by the culture as we examine whether we’re normal. Family, friends, television, movies, and music contribute to and encourage our thinking and self-evaluation. For example, the popular song “Teach Your Children Well” stipulates that we must “have a code that we can live by” that will help us be normal. The obvious question is, “What code?” Your answer to this question is crucial to determining if you’re normal.

One reason the Bible has fallen out of favor is that many people are offended by the Bible’s teachings, which tell us we are sinners. To admit to sin is distasteful because it degrades one’s self image. Thus, there is a strong movement to redefine sin as anything that is an impediment to our happiness, lifestyle, ego, reputation, or personal comfort. The concept of “situational ethics” is promoted as the code in vogue, allowing each person to decide what is right and avoid the shame of sin. This can only lead to chaos, as what is right and moral for one person is unacceptable to another.
Offensive or not, the only eternal, Truthful, and “normal” moral code is contained in the Bible, God’s Holy Word. God’s normal ways, which He reveals in His sacred book, have always been and will always be the only code we need by which to live. God’s gift of free will affords you the right to accept or reject this code. But whatever your decision, you are ultimately subject to it. We all face an eternity once our life on Earth is over, and understanding God’s ways can assure that your eternity will be joyous and peaceful. Following His ways is the only way to be normal. His standards never change, unlike those of the culture around us.
It is not an accident that you are reading this book. God has brought this book across your path for a reason – to learn what is normal. This collection of daily devotionals emphasizes and describes the Way to a normal life. They are intended to (1) encourage those already following God’s ways; and, (2) to reveal why God’s ways are normal to those who are nonbelievers. Each of us falls into one of these two categories – which one are you in?
