We have stood in a circle holding hands with our Swedish friends, in early evening, in the cold that crackles, looking up into the sky over the north pole, watching and listening, as the northern lights swirl and whisper around us for minutes as we sang together, "How Great Thou Art."

We have smelled the smoke from a burning olive grove on an island in the Adriatic, and I was bade by the men leaving our 25th anniversary party on Dugi Otok, to stay and enjoy our anniversary as they departed in small boats to the site of the fire on the other side of the island.
We have listened and recorded the sights and sounds of ancient ceremonies of the Pacific isles, and feasted with our island friends on the many delights of a faraway cuisine.
There is a severe drought here (Kenya) now, and many animals lay dead along the road. The vultures were sitting in the trees everywhere, so they would soon take care of the carcasses. The farthest edge of the game preserve is open to the countryside. I took pictures of storks, secretary birds, lions and giraffes. The giraffe was wandering about trying to find leaves on the top of the few trees.
We stopped in the middle of the trail, on Pohnpei island, water running over our shoes, and with a laugh, we asked a question to the sky, "What are we doing here?

This is an eye witness daily journal of mind-stretching travel by a middle-aged couple as teachers, photographers and videographers. Video tape and DVD copies are available for many of the journeys.
About the Author
John Russell Rider is a retired professor of mass communications. Louise Hanson Rider, recently deceased, was a retired teacher in public schools. Dr. Rider is a former officer in the US Navy, and his recent book, FURTHER REMARKS, is an account of his last year aboard a subchaser operating in the South Pacific. He earned the Ph.D. at Michigan State Unversity, and has been a teacher and administrator in several universities. Also, the Riders have traveled to more than 70 countries as consultants and guest speakers. Mrs. Rider received many awards for excellent in teaching.They have two adult children.
