This is John Harvard! A man who apparently cared so very much about the kind of education which the new college in the new world would be offering to future generations—to their predecessors, and to themselves!
For all of these visitors, for all with whatever academic and or personal Harvard connections, as well as for all those tourists who merely come to acknowledge the tremendous prestige of this place, to pay homage to the extensive influence in all kinds of education earned over the centuries by Harvard University—for all of these people I suddenly decided to take the time to do some research, and then to share the more intimate and detailed story of John Harvard. To reveal in simple terms the intriguing tale of one man’s great faith in the essential goodness of mankind, especially when guarded and guided by the sound values of excellence in education.
I’ve also tried to show how John Harvard’s strong convictions, together with his extremely explicit guidelines for progress, have been amazingly well followed over the years by the different Harvard administrators and Harvard faculties. There is an incredible fascination to be discovered in their many and varied attempts to provide the best possible kinds of teaching for all the many different kinds of individuals who kept passing through the now ‘hallowed halls’.
Because most of the statue’s visitors are not primarily scholars, or persons with advanced degrees, or even those well versed in historic data. The majority of the statue’s visitors are very busy men and women, without the time to research and discover for themselves the amazing details of the full story of John Harvard’s short but very full life. The miraculous accumulation of his wealth for example, or the wisdom of his insistence on opponents looking at both sides of any controversy. And not to forget the different kinds of books he so carefully selected for his personal library. Most of what this young man said and did very clearly revealed his uncommon love for all kinds of people. And his remarkable maturity enabled him to perceive, at a very early age, man’s incredible strengths and potential as well as his basic frailties.
