Walking up the steps to Paul's house, Jolee’s best friend and business partner for the past five years, he hears Paul talking to a very familiar voice, but he can’t come to grips with who it is. “Yeah man, that nigga' has money growing out of his ass. I don’t know where he gets it from. That’s my boy and all, but if I find out that this cat is stealing from me it’s gon’ be some shit. I love Jolee to death, but I’m starting not to trust him.”
Jolee thinks to himself that this would be a good time to walk in.
“Can’t trust who man?” Jolee questions Paul as he walks in the door. Paul and the body of the mysterious voice, Big Mouth Zane, both jump startled to see the devil of whom they were speaking of right there in their faces.
“Jolee. Jolee the pimp. How’s my main man doin’?”
“Just fine. Tired though. What’s up Zane? What the hell are you doing on this side of town?”
“You know I travel to party!” Zane lies.
“Uh....o.k., so who you not feeling right now bro?” Jolee ask Paul.
“You know I never trusted that red head son of a bitch Pilot. He owes me more money!”
“Why’d you loan it to him if you didn’t think he was good for it? How late is he on his payment?”
“Just a day. I’ll give him one more.”
“So, what you gonna' do? You gon’ handle that or what? You can’t keep letting that nigga' slide.” Jolee tells Paul while trying to fuck with his emotions. Paul was what most people on the street considered a punk. He gave people too many chances when it was time to pay up. He only pressed the issue after Jolee mentioned the matter to him. Paul is starting to get irritated with Jolee’s questions. “I’ll make that decision tomorrow, in the meantime, let’s get something to drink and party,” Paul tells Jolee leading him to where the crowd is.
“Cool, but I won’t be here long. I have to get home so that I’ll be there when your Godson calls me tonight.”
“Damn that boy makes me feel old, but then again, he’s only 21. Seventeen years younger than us. That’s my heart. Tell him his godfather said hello.”
Jolee is heated. “Sure, whatever. Let me get a drink and that package I need from you and I’ll be on my way.”
Paul gets nervous. “You got it. Help yourself while I round that up for you.”
“Round it up?”
“Yeah, I’ll be right back.” As Paul runs off, Jolee is thinking that Paul must be out of his fucking mind to think he’s going to sit there after he goes and talks about him behind his back. ‘I should have waited a while longer to see what else this fool had in mind for me. Shit. Now I gotta’ watch my back for my own best friend. I knew this shit was bound to happen, but I’m one step ahead of that fool. I got to get the fuck out of here and make some phone calls.’ Jolee tells himself.
“See I didn’t have you waiting long. Did you get your drink?”

About the Book
Some say the bond between father and son is more powerful than any religion. Jolee Exum Sr. and the son he shares his name with whom everyone calls Jaytwo, prove this theory to be correct. Jolee Sr. is the big man in his Los Angeles neighborhood who makes his living running a tight organization of number runners and loan sharks in the 1960’s. All hell breaks loose when Jolee’s best friend and freshly appointed business partner, Paul Carter, who is also Jaytwo’s godfather decides that he isn’t getting a big enough piece of the pie Jolee created.
Paul plots to extort money from Jolee by kidnapping the mother of Jolee’s only grandchild, but Paul is left without a hostage once his plan takes an unexpected turn and Jaytwo pays the price for his godfather’s greed with his life. Jolee’s murderer for hire cousin, Banks and Jet, the mother of his grandchild, were also killed in Paul’s master plan that went wrong.
Now that Jolee is the only adult his young granddaughter Taalyn has, he takes her across the earth to St. Barth’s where they start a new life. Paul is now stuck with no money and a dead trail to Jolee who he feels owes him since his kidnapping plan failed. Paul is determined to get what he feels is rightly his no matter what it takes.
About the Author
Jae State is a noteworthy author from Southern California with a writing passion that stretches back to junior high school. Jae dreamed of being a lawyer while studying to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the California State University, Northridge during the day and writing novels at night. Upon graduation, writing took full force and finally the completion of The Self Righteous One was no longer a dream.
