So full of life, a life that made him feel blessed and whole, R.C. broke into song. He released an exuberance so strong it made him almost giddy. He heard water splash as Caitlin repositioned herself and, knowing that she could hear him, began serenading her.
"Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday dear Sexy,
You are my Best Friend
And I am yours, too."
R.C. imagined the smile flooding Caitlin's face as his words reached her, flat and flavored with tin after their trip through the vent. He knew she would notice only his song, and not the flaws that traveled with it. She accepted him as he was, never expecting him to be something more, something perfect, something he never could be. R.C. found himself the day he found Caitlin. She truly was the rare and radiant wildflower he believed in long ago.
When she turned her gentle face and grew in his direction, she set him free to be himself. When his human frailties and imperfections shone through, she made no mention of it. He wondered on occasion if Caitlin even saw the cracks, the blemishes on perfection all are destined to be born with. She was blind to it all. She saw only the good in him. Her unconditional love and friendship made him complete in all ways. He had come to realize some time ago, that all he could give in return for what she'd done for him was let his spirit fly free and to be the best friend he possibly could be to her. Both would be done with the grace and honor of a prince. R.C.'s most prized possession was what he shared with Caitlin, and he would give reverence to that accordingly.
He slipped on a pair of favorite shoes and made his way to Caitlin's. He felt eager to be with her. After her revelation earlier, he saw that she was on the brink of fully comprehending the love shared between them. He hoped beyond hope that one day soon she would open up and confess that which he already knew. As tortured as he was holding back his emotions, he could not move the relationship along until she reached that level and was comfortable. He needed to be there for her, to encourage her, and to let her know it was a love built on solid friendship. The kind of love that lasts forever, weathering all of life's storms. R.C. was sure that somewhere in her heart she already knew where they were headed. He wanted to be by her side as a friend and reassure her. He knew from personal experience that the magnitude of what they had could be heady, if not a little scary. Softening that path was the least he could do.
"How's my Birthday Girl doing?" he inquired as she answered the door before the first knock was complete.

“Ned Baker situated himself in the shadows. In the snap of a twig, he found what he'd been looking for. Trouble. She couldn't be missed. No wonder his young friend was so confounded. Trouble always did that to a man.
His keen observation zeroed in on the young bride-to-be. Amidst social flitting, she was taking stock of the circle of giddy girls surrounding her friend. He was making the girls giggle as they fawned over him. The boy must have forgotten how torn up he was, but Ned saw pain in her face. She couldn't mask the heartsick complexion. She wore the grief of a young girl jilted who happened upon her love, seeing for the first time, a replacement in his arms.
The one by her side saw it, too. He stopped short, followed her gaze, and then hurried her into the blackness. Ned leaned back against a tree and watched them disappear. He poked his nose up into the thick air and breathed deep. Trouble. He smelled it brewing from miles away.”
When best friends Caitlin and R.C. face the truth in their hearts and realize that they are in-love with one another, but are afraid to confess their feelings, life changes for everyone. About the Author
D. M. Marie is a 35-year-old Gulf War Era Veteran. Dating back to 1990, she has suffered from a number of undiagnosable, yet debilitating, illnesses and is currently a Social Security Disability recipient. Through all of the times of great loss and seemingly insurmountable difficulties that plagued her life, she strove to keep a positive attitude and to do and be the best that she possibly could despite the circumstances.
She is currently hoping to make a career out of her talent and love of writing so that she may be a self-sufficient, contributing member of society who can support herself without any government assistance.
