The last time I saw her alive was when she was in Parkland hospital near downtown Dallas. She told me that everything would be fine and that no one loved me the way she did.
Mama said, “Asia, you are the best thing I ever did in my whole life.”
I told her, “I love you too Mama and I’ll see you tomorrow okay.”
“Well, like I always say, we’re not promised tomorrow so I’ll say I love you today,” she said while gently touching my face. I kissed her on her left cheek, put my finger in her right dimple, and said goodbye.
Later that night, at Grandma Lace’s, I heard the phone ring. I heard Granny say, “Oh, my dear Lord,” and “I’m on my way.” Then I heard her talking to Aunt Laura, whispering, as if she did not want me to know. Aunt Laura came into my room trying to take my mind off why Granny had to leave, but I knew something happened to Mama and I wanted so badly to go with her. By the time Grandma came home, Aunt Laura and I were asleep in Mama’s room. The sun woke me up, but I could not stop thinking about that call last night. I got up, put on my robe and went into Grandma Lace’s room. She was sitting in her chair reading the bible.
I asked, “Why didn’t you wake me up when you got home? How is my Mama, is she okay?”
“Well, Asia, you remember when I told you that your mom was really sick and that God may call her home?” She said.
“Yes Ma’am.” I said.
“I’m sorry, Asia, your Mama is home with the Father.” Tears were falling from her face.
I was confused, “What are you talking about, Grandpa isn’t alive anymore?”
While I was kneeling down to my knees in front of her, she reached up and held onto my face with both hands. She looked me directly in my eyes, with tears in hers and said,
“Sweetie, your Mama has passed away, she’s in heaven now.”
I felt my heart stop beating and start dropping, as if something was pulling it. My stomach began to hurt; it was burning. I started screaming at her,

Listen To Me is a fictional tale revolving around a mothers quest to reach her daughter, matters that its from her own grave.
Asia Kane Lace has been parentless for over two years. Residing in Dallas, Texas with her grandmother, a specific and significant birthday of Asia’s arrives. A package is delivered, yet its content was far more than a gift. It was a life journal sent from her deceased mother, Naomi.
Set from the early 80s to the present, Listen To Me is a young adult novel of a child discovering life through her mothers death. While reading into her mothers past, Asia’s idea of Naomi’s immortality is tested by the content of the journal. From her teenage years until her passing, Naomi wrote of sex, drugs, lies and love, all that would face the parentless child. By journals end Asia discovers a letter written to her from Naomi. The note reveals why she died, what lead to her death and why not even six feet of dirt and rocks could keep them apart. Through the pages of a journal assorted with influential poetry, a young girl saw death, yet discovered how to live her life.
The choices you choose conclude life or death. Listen To Me wittingly demonstrate both through a terminally ill parent using her personal life as an example. By stories end, a mother teaches life to her daughter from a coffin that was created due to her very own decisions.
