Renee Cottrell-Brown waited for just the right moment to hand her dad the Father’s Day card.
While family and friends drank, ate mounds of food and noisily scattered about the spacious mansion, Renee slid open the glass door leading outside and took a seat across from her father in a patio chair overlooking a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and well-manicured golf course in the gated community hidden away in one of Dallas’ most affluent suburbs.
Music from a Nat King Cole CD and the smell of barbecue steaks, pork ribs and hot-link sausages cooked on an open grill filled the air. A chain-smoking Comer Cottrell seemed distant, caught up in his own thoughts.

Lawrence Young was my best friend and husband for 22 years. He was a newspaper editor who mentored and inspired a legion of journalists. He used his life to lead a new generation into the profession he loved.
Mr. Young was on the Board of The National Association of Minority Media Executives of the Newspaper Association of America; The Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators, The Student Press Law Center Board. The
Lawrence Young died in July, 2002 of an heart attack. His death leaves a void that will not easily be filled.
