About the Book

Reed Shillinger is in trouble.  As is his usual habit, this trouble is the result of his actions not the actions of others.  He retreats to the place of his birth after ending a long marriage.  The depth of his internal darkness haunts him.  In the days and months following his return, he struggles to find hope and redemption.

He is not alone in his darkness.  Another man, sickened by hatred and driven to avenge ancient wrongs against his people, occupies the same land as Reed.  The blood of this man’s ancestors has turned toxic in his veins.  He is possessed by the primitive vengeful spirit of a people who lived on this land occupied by Reed.

The community is stunned by a series of terrible deaths, some of which are slayings and others assumed suicides.  Reed inadvertently becomes witness and then participant in this war between the wronged peoples of the past and naïve occupiers of the present.

Before Reed begins to rise above the dark shadow that is over him, he meets Caron.  She offers moments of lightness and love for him.  In the climactic confrontation with his enemy, Reed comes very close to losing everything.

About the Author

Merlyn Seitz was born in Monroe, Michigan in 1942.  Until he left Michigan to attend Capital University in Columbus, Ohio he lived with his family on two farms in London Township and in Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan.

Beginning in his college years, he has written stories that bring to life the many fantasies and imaginings of his more reflective moments.  Many of the images and events in the novel, Overcast, became a part of his mental library many years ago.  The story of Reed Shillinger and Madge has been waiting patiently to be written for years.  One of his strongest memories of the wonderful world of southeast Michigan is the lack of blue skies.  Weather statistics show that approximately two thirds of the time the sky is cloudy.  He has always believed that a person’s place of origin and history can provide the stuff of self-redemption.  Nevertheless, Merlyn Seitz is proud of the history and heritage of Monroe County.  The people who live there and have died there are a part of him.

He is married and the father of a daughter and a son.  His ancestors settled in the Monroe area in the mid 1800’s.  He lives on a farm in central Ohio where he continues to serve as a pastor and dabbles in activities first learned in Exeter and London townships.

Working as a Lutheran pastor, he has lived in Ethiopia and several cities and towns in Ohio.  In 1996 he received a doctor’s degree in the area of research into the place and significance of narrative for human self-understanding.  In 2004 he co-edited “Mission To Ethiopia: An American Lutheran Memoir 1957-2003” published by Kirkhouse Publishing.
