The Nightmare Begins
It was the first day of school in the seventh grade. I had just gotten to class. In first period, I started talking to Juanita, a new girl I just met. The bell rang and everybody stopped talking, but I could hear Bill popping his knuckles in the back of the class.
I looked straight ahead at the teacher, even though I couldn’t see his face. The teacher was reading a book, and the book covered his face from view. The teacher lowered the book very slowly, just revealing his eyes. His cold, dark eyes began to scan the class very slowly. I could still hear Bill popping his knuckles: pop, pop, pop.
The teacher slowly put the book on his desk. He stood very slowly and started walking very slowly toward Bill. As he passed me I turned to see where he was going. He was heading straight for Bill, still very slowly. When he arrived at Bill’s desk he picked up the desk and started shaking the desk with Bill in it like he was a tambourine. He then ran toward the door with Bill still in the desk, screaming all the way. When he got to the door he dropped the desk, pulled Bill out of it, grabbed him by the collar and pants, and threw him out into the grass. Bill was yelling the whole way. The teacher then yelled at Bill, “And don’t come back!”
Then he turned and said very calmly, “My name is Mr. Clean. This is my class. I am the teacher. There is no talking or making noise of any kind unless I give you permission. You won’t move or do anything unless I give you permission.”
About that time I noticed Bill at the door, shaking in his boots. I couldn’t help myself. I began to snicker when I saw Bill with his hand in the air, scared to death. Mr. Clean turned his attention to me.
“Boy you have a problem with what I am saying?” he asked. I pointed at Bill. The moment Mr. Clean saw him he started yelling at him.
“Boy what are you doing back here?”
Bill, his hand shaking, said, “Sir the office told me I had to have a slip saying why I was kicked out of class.”
The teacher went to his desk wrote out the slip. He threw it at Bill and told him to get out of his sight. Bill took off like a rabbit. Then the bell rang, thank goodness. Everybody started to stand up. Mr. Clean turned and stared at us.
“Every body sit down,” he said. After we were all down, he said, “Now you can leave.”
As we left the classroom, it was as if our whole bubble of how great we thought seventh grade was going to be had just popped. Everybody was in total shock, and we were all praying that the rest of our teachers weren’t like Mr. Clean.
