Blue Notes

Hello.  What am I?  I’m the last thing I ate, the last magazine article I read, the last book I looked at, the last sequence in a movie I’ve seen, the last TV show I watched, a bad dream I had today, a living cosmos, an abyss of wretchedness; and eternity is waiting.

I hold out my hand to you.  Time is running out.

Something I saw once in a fundamental Christian tract (or a church bulletin) said that when Voltaire was on his death-bed, he was just screaming the most blood-curdling screams.  The reason why was that he saw the demons who’d come to take him to Hell.  Supposedly the nurse attending him reported this.

A part of me, not the good part, found this satisfying.

It’s all a flat earth, the world we live in, says Blake.  Sun rises, sets, stars shine, all in this “space.”  This business of “globe” (a round earth, in fact, the reality) is all just “a delusion of Ulro.”

Here’s my favorite Bible story: “Elisha left Jericho to go to Bethel, and on the way some boys came out of a town and made fun of him.  ‘Get out of here, baldy,’ they shouted.  Elisha turned around, glared at them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord.  (Italics mine.)  Then two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys to pieces.  Elisha went on to Mount Carmel and later returned to Samaria.”  (2 Kings 2:23-25)

            Yeah, Elisha!  Go, man, go!  “Cursed them in the name of the Lord!”  You can do that when you’re a prophet!
