The Clock of Peaceville

The Blizzard

It was Sunday night, on a very cold winter month, and almost time for everyone to go to bed.  All of a sudden, everything in Peaceville changed.  The wind started blowing very hard.

Shortly after that, Leo looked out through the window and noticed that it was snowing.  The wind was blowing very hard, and the snow was coming down very heavily; it was a blizzard.  The wind velocity was increasing more and more as Leo stared at the heavy precipitation.

A few minutes later, as Leo was still looking out through the window, the clock chimed ten times very loudly; it was ten o’clock at night, and everyone in Peaceville went to bed.

An hour passed, and the clock chimed eleven times very softly; it was eleven o’clock at night, and everyone was fast asleep.

As the minutes passed, the snow was still coming down extremely heavily.  The wind was blowing harder than ever.  Suddenly a huge gust of wind blew the clock off the tower.  The clock started rolling away from Peaceville by the force of the wind.  It was rolled away so far that it couldn’t bee seen anymore.  The snow continued falling very heavily.  In just a few minutes, the track left by the rolling clock was completely covered by the heavy snow.

The Missing Clock

Several hours later, the entire night had passed, and it was early in the morning.  The wind had stopped blowing and the snow had stopped falling.  The sun rose, and there wasn’t a single sound in Peaceville.  No one had heard the chime of the clock, thus nobody was up or awake. 

Eventually, there were some sounds heard in town.  Some of the residents of Peaceville woke up and noticed that the sun was already very bright.

As the minutes passed, little by little, more and more people were starting to get up.  After a while there were people outdoors.

All of a sudden, a woman started shouting.

“The clock is missing!  The wind probably blew it away.”

Daisy and Leo woke up.  They got up and went to the window.  They saw that the sun was high in the sky.  They heard a man shouting outside.

“The clock is gone!  Where is the clock?”

Everyone in Peaceville was awake by then.  The entire population stepped outside of their homes.  Nobody knew what time it was because no one heard the chime of the clock.

Without the chime of the clock, everyone went into a state of total confusion.  Without knowing the time, they didn’t know when to do anything.  At that point, they were totally lost.  Nobody knew what to do next.  The entire population was waiting for Mayor O’Brien to tell them what they should do.

The first thing that Mrs. O’Brien did was to declare that day a holiday.  Nobody had to go to work or school.  How could they go?  Without the clock, they didn’t hear the chime, and without the chime, they didn’t know what time it was or when to go anywhere or do anything.

Mrs. O’Brien quickly went into action.  She organized a search party to go look for the clock.  The search party left immediately………….
