About the Book

Did you ever catch polliwogs in the swamp beside your school?

Have you had a chance to ride in the locomotive of a train?

Did you ever scare pigeons in the church belfry?

These are mostly funny stories of a small town in Maine in the 20’s and 30’s told by a State –of-Mainer herself, who remembers with sharp humor and great human interest.

You will laugh when you read about the corset lady who pulled in all the fat women in town and when you hear about the barber shop where she found out what a cuspidor was for. And it will delight you to find fifty recipes, favorites of this small town.

About the Author

Betty Kennedy Tufts is a true “State of Mainer,” born in North Berwick in 1922. She spent there, as she readily claims, a wonderful and happy childhood with her parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles. After North Berwick High School, she graduated from Gorham, Maine State Teachers College, now the University of Southern Maine, and she became a Junior High School teacher of social studies. She taught in Maine, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Betty married Stan, her high school beau, who held school administrator positions in New Hampshire.  With a great interest in interior decoration, they built or remodeled eight houses along the way. They retired in Wells, Maine where Betty had her own antique shop for 20 years. She also set up and sold at antique shows in New England. They had three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A widow now, living in Wells, Maine she enjoys her family, her church, friends and mostly, the humorous side of all things.
