Jason looked at the young girl, lying on the bed. She looked so small and frail, amidst the machines monitoring her vital signs.
"You’ve no idea who she is or why she tried to kill herself?" he asked the young doctor.
"The who is something we had hoped you could tell us. She had your name and phone number in her pocket and nothing else. The why is another matter; that will have to wait until she awakens."
Jason stared at the child and shook his head. "I’ve never seen her before. Do you think she’ll make it?"
"It’s too early to tell. There was half a bottle of scotch and an empty aspirin bottle lying beside her. According to the blood test, she had enough in her to seriously hurt an adult and a child that size...? We pumped her stomach and now all we can do is wait...and pray."
At the mention of scotch, Jason frowned; he only knew of one person who drank the stuff, his cousin. He shook his head; he hadn’t seen Robert in years. He didn’t even know if he was still in
"Where did you find her?"
"In an alley behind an old warehouse. Some kids came across her and called the police."
Jason frowned deeper and stared at the girl. She couldn’t be more than six or seven. Then he turned to the doctor.
"Sorry, I couldn’t help you. I hope she pulls through and you find out who she is and what happened."
The doctor smiled wanly. He had hoped for something more from this man. The paper in her jeans had been their only clue, now it had come to nothing.
"Thank you for coming down, Mr. Libertine."
The two men shook hands and Jason left the hospital, but if he thought he could just forget that little girl, he was wrong.
She stayed with him at work and all the way home to the large, imposing house he lived in with his father and younger brother and sister.
That night, he sat in the private suite his father had built for him within the Libertine mansion, and remembered the pale face and all those machines. Most of all, he wondered why a child so young would wish she was dead.

Seven year old Alicia’s life has been so horrific up to this point she sees death as her only alternative.

Just when she thought her life was perfect, she is back in the hands of the man who abused her and the people she loves believe she is dead.
She is on his island, a place where Satan rules. She is degraded, beaten and forced to give him sons so his name will continue.
She tries hard to give her children love and security but Satan’s island is a hellish place to be, until she finds a friend, a man who hates the island as much as she and gets word to New York she is alive.
Can she finally find the true love she has dreamed of all these years? Will Jason see her as a beautiful woman or will she forever be his ‘baby sister’ and deprive them both of the happiness they long for.
About the Author
Kathryn Guilford emigrated to Canada from England in 1968. She ran her own business for fifteen years, but her love of writing was never far from her mind and heart. She did some freelance writing for The Winnipeg Sun, one of the local newspapers, and began a journey that finally resulted in her first book being published.
The family she writes about belong to her in mind, body and soul and this is the first of many books she hopes to get published.
She writes under her maiden name and lives in Winnipeg, Canada. She is the mother of three brothers, who she and her husband, adopted when they were six, seven and eight. She is also the grandmother of two little girls, Ashley and Amanda.
