ACP is a type of estate and life planning that focuses on issues that need to be considered when a person becomes ill, disabled, incompetent, unconscious or incapacitated. Waiting until one of these events occurs is too late. Health care, financial, memorial and burial decisions will be made by someone whether you did advance planning or not. There are established rules that will be followed in the absence of any specified plans, but those decisions may not be right for you; they may not be the decisions you want made.
Your health care decisions need to be made according to your wishes; anatomical gifts should be made if that is your desire when you die; bills need to be continuously paid; property interests need to be managed in the cheapest and most efficient manner possible; and funeral and burial arrangements will become necessary.
