Many parents have no idea who their children spend time with. Friends don’t call the house, they call the cell phone. At first, parents celebrated this fact. Finally let’s free up the home phone. Now it never rings and parents have no idea what’s going on with their children. This kind of independence can create more distance and damage when it comes to having a healthy parent child relationship. Kids don’t think their parents have the right to know what is going on in their lives because they are talking on their cell phones behind the closed doors of their rooms. In school the child spends more time text messaging friends than they do taking notes. The cell phone separates and divides. Kids use it as a tool to conceal information from their parents and connect with a false sense of autonomy that can be disruptive to their development. I don’t think that a ten year old child needs a cell phone there is such a thing as too young.

Bill Cosby Ain’t Crazy, is a resource for anyone who is charged with the awesome responsibility of providing guidance to a young person. Crazy will be particularly helpful to parents and educators alike. Crazy is a call to action for all parents and caregivers, asking them for more active and responsible participation in the raising and development of their young people. The book also acknowledges the fact that many parents are working hard to give their children both the support and structure that is needed; details the challenges facing many of our schools and communities which result from dealing with children who are not receiving the necessary parenting required to become positive members of either group; and attempts to highlight the great work being done by the hardest working and least appreciated group of people on the planet, public school teachers all across this country. Inspired by the provocative comments made by Mr. Bill Cosby as he called for the community to look at where we are and do more to get to where we need to be. The other great inspiration for the writing of this book was the passing of his father Melvin R. Coutreyer. One of the greatest accomplishments of a person’s life is the type of parent that they tried to be and Melvin Coutreyer was a great father to his children. The last page of this book was written first and then the work went into reaching the goal of completing the project. Raising children is no different. Imagine a child that is respectful, kind, educated, thoughtful and responsible. Then work like hell to help them develop the skills necessary to become that person. It’s not about making all the choices for your children because if you raise the kind of child described in the previous sentence they will be able to make good decision for themselves.
