he drops hit the window in soft waves. It was raining, but she didn’t care. The weather matched her mood as she looked out the window of her new house. The early morning was a little chilly, something she was not used to. It was also the morning Casey dreaded. The first day in her new school was finally here.
She nervously watched the rain gently run down the living room window. Casey leaned her cheek against the cool glass and drew a large heart shape figure on the steamy pane with her finger. In the middle of the heart she wrote, “Casey and Kat, friends forever.”
“Oh, Kat,” she sighed, “Will I ever have another friend like you in all the world.”

“Why did we have to move, anyway,” Casey whispered to herself. “I’ll never find a friend like Kat again.”
The last time Kat and Casey saw each other, they vowed to always be sisters. Not sisters in the family sense, but sisters of the heart. In fact, they gave each other a charm to wear around their necks to show their love for each other. It was a charm of a heart cut in two, each wearing a half. That’s how Casey felt this morning. Her heart was cut in two.
“Come along, Casey,” Mama said. “I’ll drive you to school today because I want to meet your teacher and see your classroom.”

About the Author
Sandra grew up in rural
As an adult, Sandra taught 4th grade for a number of years before taking a break in order to be home with her three young children. When entering the work force again, she decided to switch gears by going back to school for an RN degree.
It was after retirement from a satisfying nursing career that she discovered the joy of writing for children and drew from the lasting impact of her own easy, nostalgic look of growing up. She manages to include her grandchildren in her stories, making one or more the “star” in each of her works.
