...With that, we went over to the flight line to wash the airplanes Cody had lined up. Victoria came with us and said that she wanted to give it a try. We had a Cessna 150 and an old Ercoupe, a vintage two place aircraft from the forties. Luis cranked up the sprayer and we got going. Victoria helped with every task and fitted in well. She was a really good worker and became part of our team--well, not really a member of the Cody''s Lair team as she''d have to wait until she flew with Cody to earn that honor.
We finished in about two hours or so and dropped by Cody''s office to introduce Victoria to him. They really seemed to hit it off and talked up a storm. When we were leaving, he loaned us his four walkie-talkie radios so we could always keep in contact with each other and practice radio calls. He explained that the radios had a range of almost thirty miles when charged up, and we could call his office, too, even leave a message for him. That meant that we could call each other just like using cell-phones..neat.
I asked Cody what he thought about Victoria when I was leaving. He said, "Eddie, if you threw that little girl in a pond, you could skim sweet off the top for a week." I wasn''t too sure what he meant by that, but I guessed he thought she was pretty nice. It probably had something to do with that old saying about girls being sugar and spice and everything nice. What was it out boys? Oh, yeah: snakes and snails and puppy dog tails. Whatever, I guessed Cody liked her. Actually, come to think of it, she could be pretty sweet.
We were about ready to go when Cody stopped us. "You guys want to go to San Antonio with me tomorrow?"
We all looked at each other, and then Luis asked, "In the Staggerwing?"
Cody grinned. "Sure, I thought it was time y''all got a ride in her."
"Yes!" we all screamed in unison. "What time?"

About the Book
"Winging It" is a delightful story about three pre-teens from Florida who spend a summer together in Laredo, Texas, a border town with a reputation for intrigue. Eddie, Jack, and Victoria hook-up with Cody, an old barnstorming pilot and his thirteen year old amigo, Luis. They teach our trio how to fly, and steer them into an adventure they will never forget, filled with mystery and deception. They learn about many "Critters" as well: Armadillos, Javelina, Rattlesnakes, Tarantulas, Scorpions, and the worst critter of all...a real live Terrorist. The story finds our heroes learning many of life''''s teachings, including lessons about growing-up and how boys know when girls like them.
About the Author
The author grew up during World War II. He lived in an almost fatherless neighborhood with his boyhood friends; consequently searching for heroes, he found them in books and in the newsreels at Saturday matinees. His first "real" hero was an Army Air Corps pilot who gave him his first flight in an open cockpit trainer. He introduced Dick to aerobatics and taught him the joys of playing with the clouds; the young boy left part of his soul in the sky, providing him with his first life quest. He became an Air Force fighter pilot and served his country for thirty-three years. After retirement, he recalled the stories and events that influenced him during his formative years and decided to becoming a teller of stories, so that he might positively inspire others to follow their own dreams.
