Though a young man scarcely twenty, his face, pale as a corpse; had the appearance of age. A quantity of black hair descended low over his eyebrows, while the small, black, piercing eyes and lines of his face, denoted shrewdness.
The glance of this individual was cutting, but indicated cunning rather than intelligence. His lips were straight, but so thin that, as they closed, they were compressed within his mouth. His cheek bones were broad and projecting, which to most would be an indication of insolence and craftiness; while the flatness of his forehead and the enlargement of the back of the skull, which rose much higher than his oddly shaped ears, combined to form facial features that seemed somewhat lizard-like.
Coligni paused a moment and glanced at the young man as he walked toward him.
“That fellow has a bad appearance,” he thought to himself. “Why is it that all do not retreat with disgust at the sight of that flat, receding, serpent-like forehead, round skull and sharp hooked nose like the beak of a vulture?”

This book covers the time from 1547-1620. Which is experienced through the eyes of what may be considered an average family of the time, by the name of Estevan.
The first half of the book involves the father, Francisco Estevan, and his struggles of choice between Priesthood or a young female Huguenot. Whether he should stand with the French or Spanish, and then there was the evil Frenchman John Gyrot who refused to give him a moment’s peace.
The second half of the book, begins with the English pirate Sir Francis Drake destroying the
This second half will be about his son Philip, and his enslavement for the next 20 years at sea.
It will be the next forty years through great hardships and adventures before this family is again reunited.
