Somewhere in the street he could hear broken power lines slashing through the air, repeatedly snapping like bullwhips against the wall of Amistad. His bed shook from a thunderous blue flash and explosion when a power transformer tumbled from a utility pole and crashed to the ground. Rob lay still, hoping inaction would calm the outside demons. The darkness was disorienting. Although now more scared than spiritual, Rob wondered if he should be praying. He was so used to doing this with his congregation that his solo prayer now seemed insignificant. Could he pray lying down and did he have to get up from the bed and down on his knees? And did that really matter now? What did he really want except to ride out this horrendous storm and not be trapped in the rubble of Casa Amistad. Throughout his whole life he had been told prayer was the antidote. Fight temptation? Pray. Need a favor? Pray. Would prayer could have any effect? No, these doubts are the devil, he thought. At least, this is what Pastor Chapin might say. I need, Rob thought, to talk to someone like Pastor Chapin. He needed reassurance. Certitude.
