"Kate!" I heard my mother’s voice boom through my head.
"What?" I asked, turning to see her standing right behind me.
"How dare you bring people like that to our home?" She yelled.
"There’s nothing wrong with Todd, he’s a nice guy!" I yelled back.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back and stole everything we have of value. Did you see the way he was looking around?"
"Todd isn’t like that, you don’t even know him!" I screamed. "You’re prejudice!"
"Kate, I’m not prejudice. I just believe that people should be with their own kind. I don’t want my only daughter to end up in a mixed marriage!"
"Mom, marriage is the furthest thing from my mind right now! Besides I’ll marry whoever I want to marry! You can’t control me!" I tried to push past her, but she shoved me back against the kitchen sink.
"Just don’t bring that colored boy into our home anymore!" She beamed, with her bony finger grinding into my chest. She pulled away from me and sat down at the table with her hands over her head.
"You had no right to treat Todd like that." I could feel the tears rolling down my face. They practically burned holes in my skin. "You hate Todd because he’s black? Well I hate you, Grace!" I screamed as I moved closer to her. "I hate you because you’re YOU, and I’m ashamed to be your daughter. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t have a mother anymore." My voice was raw and cracking from all the yelling. Grace just sat there looking stupid, the way she always does when she’s wrong.

Monica Louise Bryant was born and raised in Banning California. She enjoys reading, drawing, and playing piano; but found her true love in making up stories. She has been writing poems and short stories since second grade and often finds comfort within the pages of a blank notebook.
