Early one morning Tortoise, Hare, Fox, and Lion heard “cockle-doodle doo, cockle-doodle doo, cockle-doodle doo,” coming from the rain forest. The animals went to the High God Mbataku to find out what they should do.
When they gathered around the shrine of the High God, Tortoise said, “Me and my friends heard a cock crow three times this morning.” Mbataku told the animals that a thief was stealing from the stalls in the marketplace.
Then he said, “Go to the marketplace tomorrow and stay there until the end of the day. At the end of your journey return here to me with a basket of kola nuts and I will know that you have done as you were told and the thief has been captured.”
Before they departed Hare said to his acquaintances, “My dear good friends, will you please do me the honor of meeting me in the village square before we leave.” They formed a pact and agreed to meet one another at dawn.
