I would like to invite you to look with me at a study that reveals some of the basic thinking that many people have in regard to the subject of time. A recent survey was conducted asking students at various ages this question: “What is the purpose of getting good grades?” You would think that the over-all answer would be: “To grow in knowledge and to elevate oneself to a higher level.” When students in high school were asked the question “What is the purpose of getting good grades?” the general answer was: “So I can be accepted into a good college.” When students in college were asked the question, “What is the purpose of getting good grades?” The general answer was: “So that when I graduate, I can land a well-paid job.” When the same college students were asked, “Why is it important to land a well-paid job?” the over-all answer was “So I can retire early on in life.” One can draw several conclusions as to why the students answered the way they did. But I would like to suggest that much of our thinking is founded upon passing time. In essence, the students’ answers are based upon the model they receive from adults, who are often hurrying through life so that they can arrive at the end. This is very sad and morbid thinking, but when we look in the mirror, we often find ourselves thinking along the same lines. Managing time: To live life to the fullest, we must embrace every minute in the present, both good and bad, so we can grow to become stronger individuals. The view of time is not to wish that it was all behind us but instead, ahead of us. When we read biographies of great people, the common theme that we often hear at their deathbed is that they wished that they had spent more time with the people they cared for. You will never find a person at their deathbed saying, “I wish I had spent more time at the office, or I wish I had spent more time traveling for work and being away from my spouse and my family.” We need to emphasize the importance of the time we have at hand. Whether you are newlyweds or empty nesters: Do not let your days pass by without investing your time in affecting your marriage, your family, or your community with heartfelt interest and love.
