Sera was aware she was becoming annoyed as she dialed into her voice mail. The gasp escaped before she could catch it. She heard the all too familiar voice of Dugan Geraime. She felt her entire body tense up. Sera put the phone down and walked to the kitchen to avoid eye contact with Richard. She needed to compose herself before she faced him again. “Would you like some wine?” “Hello, sweetie. This is me, Richard. I know you’re upset so stop trying to hide it with that cute little, ‘would you like some wine’ voice. You don’t have to discuss this call with me if you don’t want to. But whatever you do, please be honest with me.” “Okay. I just need a minute. Just give me a little minute. Then, let’s go out and let the phone ring to its heart’s desire.” “Sera, avoiding the call won’t make it go away.” “You are right. But I’m not ready to deal with this call. Not with you and not with the caller.” “Okay. Let’s go. Do you have someplace in mind or should I decide?” “That’s what I like about you, Richard Felts. You are a take-charge man with a plan and solution. But you’re not bossy. I’m not in a frame of mind to make any decisions. Would you decide where we should go? Surprise me.” Sera was surprised at her own response. She hated surprises and seldom trusted anyone to make decisions for her without her participation. This was new. Richard effortlessly helped Sera put her blue sweater on over the matching shell and the two walked to the door. Just as Richard reached for the doorknob, the doorbell rang.
