The sound of pouring gasoline was loud in my ears as I bent down and looked into the wrecked car. All I could see of the driver was some blond hair, a leather jacket, and a shoulder bone sticking out of the jacket. From the position of his body, his face must be lying in the upturned roof of the car, which was now acting like a saucer, catching and holding the liquid as it spilled. And the guy wasn’t moving. Soon he would be breathing the rising gas into his lungs; and if so, he wasn’t going to last long.

I had never been more frightened in my life.
It had started out such a quiet evening. At that time I was office manager in a real estate firm, and had stayed late that night to finish up a sales contract. That done, there were some other papers to look over, to get them ready for the secretary to type the next morning. By the time it was all done, it was a lot later than I had thought - time to head for home. Walking out to my car, I realized that I had missed a nice spring evening.
As I started up my car and began to pull out of the parking lot, I heard a car coming around the curve in front of me. I stopped and listened. It was a dangerous bend in the road - cement walls lined each side, holding up the railroad tracks above, and the road narrowed just as it curved to the left. It was a place to drive carefully.
This driver didn’t seem to know that. As I watched, a car came around the bend at high speed, and then hit the cement wall. It flipped onto its roof and skidded at least 20-25 yards. I remember watching as it skidded and thinking it was going to skid forever.
Almost before it had stopped I had pulled up beside it, put my car in park and was out the door in seconds flat. That was when I first heard the pouring gas, and realized the trouble we were in.
Now, seeing the driver’s situation, there wasn’t time to think; anything that could be done had to be done quickly. I started to crawl into the upside-down vehicle, but as I went, I was arguing with God.
“Please, God, send help for this young man, I cannot do this.” The fumes filled my nose and lungs as I crawled into the gasoline-filled roof. “Please God help me get his face up out of this gas.”
None of the ways I tried to turn his head up out of the gas worked, and at the same time, it kept rising. Meanwhile I was very aware that if another car came around that same curve, the chances were good that it wouldn’t be able to stop before it crashed into us. At that moment I saw the headlights coming, and I knew our time was up.
One good tug on the leather jacket flipped the man onto his back, and I grabbed the collar and began to pull and crawl backwards at the same time. The window that I had crawled into a minute before seemed to be getting smaller and smaller as we moved backwards through the broken glass. Hands, knees, teeth - I used everything in me to pull that guy out.

About the Book
I hope that this book, my own personal school of hard knocks, will help give people a little insight. Having information is the best way to make decisions.
The act of helping did have a price, there were bumps in the road. I found that during the hard times a memory of childhood came back to me. I always knew that some day, I would rise so far above a frightening situation, or bad time. Even the thought of the terrible times as a child, I knew there would be a time to say “Look God, I made it. .
Never let there be a day that by crossing you think you are to old or unable to obtain your dream!
If you want something reach out and grab for it, you may want the stars, and even by falling short , you could still reach the moon.
No one is going to hand you your desires on a platter, you will have to get there on your own.
I do know that it may not be obtainable by dropping all of your responsibilities, and going for the brass ring, so keep the day job. Enjoy the road along the way because this is what our lives are made of. My grandmother had a saying or two that helped me. Each day is made up of hours, and opportunities, always do at least one thing, every day, that makes you happy. It can be one small thing or large, but just enjoy that one meal, walk, talk with someone. I usually found that the free things are the most rewarding and make the best memories.

Starting with helping battered women or anyone in need, she quickly progressed through various surprising experiences to working as a private investigator. This in turn led her to government work, and in the end, to go through the rigors of the FBI police academy, to become an FBI police officer.
Now retired, Nicola is once again focusing on helping others; currently she is working on bringing a food bank to her local area, one that will help many people out of yet one more tough spot. She is also active, as always, in helping many in a more individual way.
