Startled somewhat by the re-emergence of the inner voice, which had remained quiet since warning Paul to take cover, he responded, aloud.
“Too late for what........will you please tell me what the hell is going on, here?”
Paul listened for an answer, but no voice spoke, either imagined, or real. Nonetheless, he picked up his pace considerably, swinging his arms back and forth, as he quickly moved closer to the graveyard.
As Paul neared the entrance to the old burial ground, a wave of apprehension enveloped him. The old, wrought-iron gate remarkably stood partly open, in the same position it was in the last time he was here, more than thirty years ago. He had come here with Mary Ellen, for reasons he still was not aware of and had broken down miserably, not having the slightest idea why. Mary Ellen had walked her sobbing husband back to their car and Paul had vowed that he would never come here again. Trying hard not to think about that last visit, so many years ago, Paul turned his attention away from the gate and into the enclosure, where, as far as he could tell, nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.
“What the hell am I supposed to do now?” he thought, as he stood at the entrance. The old cemetery was dark, except for two or three luminous shafts of moonlight, which had managed to snake their way down through the dense canopy of tree branches which overhung the graveyard. As he looked around, Paul expected to receive another urgent command to hurry, but none was forthcoming. His gaze was interrupted by the first moonbeam, shining brightly on an open patch of moss-covered soil. As if by an unspoken celestial order, Paul turned his head slowly to the next shaft of light, which poured across the top and side of a centuries-old headstone. The ground to the right of the stone was also bathed in moonlight. This piece of earth, however, appeared somehow, to be different. The ground was not smooth, as was the earth under the first beam. Paul moved steadily closer, his vision confirming what he had suspected. The top soil had been disturbed. Not only that, but there was an object, a spherical shape, about two or three feet to the left of the uneven ground.
A new revelation hit Paul. This was the destination! THIS WAS IT! The object looked more and more familiar the closer he got to it. Within fifteen feet of the object, Paul was now able to clearly see the stitched seams and what appeared to be writing, or at least some type of markings.
