Or Call It Hope
When not a leaf remained for camouflage,
And I looked out the window half-awake,
I thought that I was seeing a mirage
Or that is presence must be some mistake.
A fiery spark upon a blackened bough,
He sat while snow came drifting down, alone,
The only brightness in a world till now
A study, unrelieved, in monotone.
He scarcely caught my eye when leaves were green,
But now I could not help but notice him:
A flame like none that I had ever seen
Burned steadily upon a barren limb.
And this when I had almost failed to cope—
Call it a cardinal, or call it hope.

Early Autumn
Somewhere cicada sings good-bye;
Chestnut ripens in the town.
Like giant monarch butterfly
Russet oak leaf sidles down.
When morning chill comes creeping in,
We know the season doomed at last
Yet meanwhile watch the spider spin
Her web to hold the summer fast.
