About the Book

The young police officer stared at Karen.  In a controlled voice he said, "I can see tomorrow's headlines.  Female cyclist pedaling across the United States alone is murdered in Minnesota.’  What are you trying to prove, young lady?!!"  I wanted to ask him what century he was from since I knew women are doing all sorts of adventuresome activities on their own.

You Who Are on the Road, tells how Karen began and completed a 10,000-mile bicycle journey around the periphery of the United States.  The physical experience of bicycling serves as a metaphor for her spiritual transformation as a result of her experiences and the people she met along the way. Current times mark an upsurge of individuals seeking new ways to find meaning in their lives.  Though we all pedal our own unique paths, we can learn from the experience of others as we move along our roads of life.  Author William Least Heat-Moon, fellow explorer, (Blue Highways, 1982; River-Horse, 1999) wrote Karen letters offering words of wisdom and encouragement.  His most emphatic suggestion--'Complete the trip’ resonated in her soul many times during the thirteen-month journey.  Mr. Least Heat-Moon knew from his experience that living a dream is hard work

This book gently suggests ways for others to explore new territories physically, emotionally and spiritually.  People looking for help in their journey through life can learn from the anecdotes told by others on the journey.  Those looking for an adventure will find it in You Who Are on the Road.  The true good nature of most people will bring hope to those who are cynical about our troubled times.

About the Author

Karen wakes up and cycles for hours each day.  After a nap, and some fruits and nuts she sips tea and writes about the dramas of the human condition.  That’s the fantasy.  However, until that fantasy becomes a reality she works as a Health and Fitness Consultant, Personal Trainer and Registered Nurse, writing in her spare time.

Since grammar school, Karen has written poetry and journals for self-expression.  She has served as editor for numerous newsletter publications in the various organizations she has belonged to throughout the years.  Karen had two short stories published in, Touched by a Nurse, by Jim Kane MN, RN, CNS, CNAA and Carmen Germaine Warner, MSN, RN, FAAN.

Bicycling remains an integral part of Karen’s life though she spends more time on local rides than touring the countryside.

Lynne has been writing for publication since the fifth grade, when she had a poem published in the McKinley Elementary Times.  After seven years of school journalism and editorships, Lynne was managing editor of a bi-weekly at the local community college and feature writer for the Spartan Daily at San Jose State University.  Since 1975 she has been Public Information Officer with the San Diego Community College District. Everything she writes gets into print: news releases, annual reports, and course announcements.

Lynne says, “I write the facts by day and fiction by night.”  She recently had an essay included in a chapbook called, Excerpts with an essay that was personally factual.  Since she has yet to publish fiction Lynne decided to team up with Karen to help her in realizing her dream of writing You Who Are on the Road.

Lynne has a son, Quinn, who is a great source of inspiration for her continued writing.
