Nicky Newport was born in the small town of Bold, Louisiana on a hot sunny fall day. Nicky was marked for life. She would start her childhood as being superficial of a curse. That would stay with her through out her childhood and all of her adult life. She would seek the love of anyone who would give it to her. That means everyone except her own mother.
From what she could remember, her parents appeared very happy together. Nicky’s mother, Taboo seemed like she was glad to have another daughter. She knew that God had answered her prayers. Nicky was the last of four children she had two older brothers, Tony, Jeff ,and a sister named Doris who died under mysterious circumstances. The memory of her sister was kept alive through worn out childhood photos, but her mother never really explained how her sister died. Somehow the family knew that Nicky was a special child. Nicky herself always felt different from her brothers.
In the summer of 1967 the Newport’s moved to Covington, where Nicky was enrolled at Covington Elementary, at the age of five. For the next 3 years, everything was fine until her world came shattering down around her in 1970. Her father had abruptly left the family and the secret of how Nicky’s sister died, was finally revealed.
Aunt Sue was coming for a visit tomorrow and Taboo had been acting strange all night. Aunt Sue has a copper tone complexion, with almond shaped dark brown eyes with long wavy hair. She was what people would call over weight, weighing over one hundred and ninety pounds. But to Aunt Sue she was one of the biggest and the most beautiful woman that walked the face of the earth. But as far as a personality goes, she could be a real witch. To most people she was too confident. But no one would dare tell her that. So as usual Nicky had assumed the responsibilities of running the household. At the age of 8, she was well advanced beyond her years. She had been forced to mature much quickly than any other eight-year-old girl. She didn’t have time to play with her friends or play with her trucks or Barbie dolls because she had much more to do. Her life consisted of holding the family together. Cooking, cleaning, and tending to her brothers as if she was the woman of the house, as if she had gave birth to them darn children. Aunt Sue never came to the Newport’s home empty handed. She either brought her famous peach cobber or sweet potatoes pies and even a pot of gumbo. During one of Taboo’s emotional out burst Aunt Sue pulled Nicky to the side and told her “Your mother has been acting strange because she killed your sister!” “How did that happen? Nicky questioned. “Well baby,” Aunt Sue said she rolled over on top of her and she died? There hadn’t been enough evidence to prosecute her so all charges were dropped. Nicky couldn’t believe what she was hearing; this was all too new to her. She didn’t know how to react. She was standing as Aunt Sue continued the story. But by time Aunt Sue finished, Nicky nearly passed out.
After the big news came out, Nicky’s mother sent her to stay with a lady named Mrs. Clara. Ms. Clara was the pastor of the church God of Christ. Anyone who was anyone knew Ms. Clara. She was the most caring, sweetest, and loving person in the world. She did not have a mean bone in her body. She would give anyone the shoes off her feet if anyone asked her. She had no children but always wanted children. So when Nicky came into her life it was a blessing. Nicky knew she would miss her brothers and all their happy times that she could remember they shared talking, running track, and playing football together. But at the same time she was relieved. She knew that she could be a child again. She was happy to be out of the environment of Covington.
