“As there are numerous kinds and personality types of young white females who engage in interracial dating, there are also those who come from the suburbs, exurbs, and occasionally from the upper classes, into the hood or ghetto, looking for love or sex in the “thugged-out” black male, to get the three things they want: (1) a bad boy; (2) a black boy and (3) a means to tweak the nerves of her parents. In this act, she demonstrates the ultimate form of rebellion, where her parents may be concerned, and she not only knows this but she delights in her awareness of it.”
“Black people and white people tend to use two diff erent standards for the purpose of co-opting the other race as a new honorary member. Whites, as we have seen, will typically co-opt a black person into their group if he or she has attained outstanding achievement in the world of academia, entertainment, science, politics, perhaps, and sports. Or, if a black person achieves fame and notoriety in some other highly regarded manner. If by virtue of mannerisms, habits, interests, and dialect, blacks possess characteristics similar to whites, individual whites will tend to coopt them. However, it is only the fi rst grouping of characteristics (involving widespread recognition of achievement) that will bring a black person near universal acceptance and co-optable status among most whites. In other words, only if they (that is, black folks) have demonstrated in some big way that they are “worthy” of being inducted into the “Alabaster Hall of Masters” are they met with universal acceptance, and subsequently coopted by the white race en masse. Blacks, generally speaking, tend to use a less stringent or restrictive standard.”

Terry Moore, a former New Yorker, is a self-styled poetic writer of prose. He is an ardent lover of the liberal arts and humanities. “Terry Moore, Unmask” represents his first nonfictional work.
