About the Book

Tolerance is the buzzword of the modern university.  Any and all ideas, save one, must be respected, no matter how offensive or controversial.  The one glaring exception is Christianity.  On college campuses across this great land, Christians are regularly ridiculed and silenced. 

Janis Price was a well respected administrator and instructor in DePauw University’s education department for thirteen years.  In 2001, she was severely reprimanded by the university.  Her alleged crime was permitting students to read education related materials printed by a Christian organization.  Although no assignment was made, one student was offended and immediately complained to the university.  Mrs. Price was severely punished for offending this student.   Knowing that she had been wronged, she appealed her punishment through proper university channels. Finding no relief there, she was forced to file a lawsuit. What followed was a wildly unpredictable ride through Indiana’s legal system.

Tolerating the Intolerable chronicles Janis Price’s career at DePauw University, the events leading up to her demotion, and the legal history of the case.  Most importantly, it expounds several possible motives for the egregious behavior of DePauw University officials toward Mrs. Price.  This case has garnered international attention from sources ranging from columnist and author David Limbaugh to the American Family Association Journal and the “700 Club.”  Tolerating the Intolerable represents one tiny piece of a vast and shamefully Christophobic trend on American college campuses.  It is a must read for anyone concerned with the nation’s dangerous slide into secularism.

About the Author

Jeffrey D. Shively is a passionate historian, finding greatest interest in the Second World War, automotive history and political history. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from DePauw University in December 1994. Five years later, he returned to school to add an Indiana teaching license to his credentials. Currently, Mr. Shively is completing a Masters of Arts degree in History at Indiana State University while teaching at a local community college.

Mr. Shively has many interests outside of writing and history. He is a fan of all genres of jazz, but Glenn Miller is his favorite bandleader. The efforts of Stan Getz and Chet Baker have struck his fancy lately. He has played the trumpet for twenty years. A fan of traditional patriotic band music, Mr. Shively has spent the past nineteen summers playing in community bands. A lover of fine things, he collects antique Cadillacs. Currently, his stable includes models from 1941, 1960, 1965, and 1992. He has served as director of the Indiana Region of the Cadillac-LaSalle Club since 1999 and is active in the Auburn-Cord- Duesenberg Club and Classic Car Club of America. Whenever possible, Mr. Shively cruises the forgotten roads of yesteryear, be it the National Road, the Lincoln Highway, or Route 66.

As a lifelong Hoosier, Jeffrey Shively has had traditional American values instilled in him since birth. Mr. Shively believes that strong, moral, Christian men are the bedrock of American society, so he has been involved with Promise Keepers for six years. He currently resides in Greencastle, Indiana.
