Is your family dys functional?

Some time ago, a friend and I began to discuss dysfunctional families. She stated that “all families were dysfunctional,” and I, on the other hand, said, “No way,” thinking that there were some “Donna Reed families,” and so for a time, we went back and forth. Finally, I began to think more concisely and realized that people really were dysfunctional, and that being said, what about these other families? I acknowledged her point of view, and then we began to debate the level at which some families function, and from those discussions an idea was formed.
As I reflected on the many occasions in which I had been in a dysfunctional situation and witnessed dysfunctional occurrences, I decided to write them down. Not being a psychologist or a trained professional, these instances all came from my musings and vivid imagination. As I compared and contrasted function and dysfunction, the difference was vast, so I decided to have a little fun. First, I list the dysfunctional way to handle a situation then the functional way to relate; the two are wildly different, and this was done with intention. Of course, the lesson here, as with most situations, is balance. However, this is a serious subject, and in writing it, a tremendous healing took place in me, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Birds do it, bees do it, we all do it, and sometimes the result is...a family. Lineage, ancestry, relatives; the ones we can never escape from, nor should we want to. Sometimes we get a break and our families are fantastic. All your needs are met and you are well prepared to conquer your fears, make the right decisions, and find the perfect mate.
But all too often, we are taught trepidation, manipulation, and arrogance. These tools served us to a point before we met others more equipped to deal with life. Now we must make a decision, fight or flight.
After a number of battles, I learned that not everyone was my enemy. As of late, I learned conflict can be resolved without harsh, demeaning words and sometimes, as my brother taught me, "to disagree is not always to be disagreeable."
Is my family dysfunctional? Sure is. Yours?
