Either of two things will save your ass. I know this because it saved my ass and I’ve heard the same things from hundreds of people. Either you’re desperate enough that you have to stay around, or you hear and see a few people who seem genuinely happy, at ease, peaceful, and ‘speak right’, and you say to yourself, “That’s how I want to be.”
Here’s another interesting thing. That’s where the answers lie. It’s like God’s a practical joker because you gotta go to a boring, depressing room full of losers to become happy, joyous and free. Weird, huh?
Later on, if you’re one of the ones who hangs around long enough, you’ll begin to see that these people, the ones you looked at as losers, really aren’t losers. They’re sad and confused perhaps, but they’re trying and learning at whatever pace is theirs.
And, I promise you this one, you will slowly learn true pieces of wisdom, not book-learning, “say-it cause-you’re-supposed-to” wisdom. It will be true wisdom.
You’ll learn a lot of it from the most unlikely people. That’s when you’ll learn that you were really, really arrogant. You were sure you were so much better than most of them, more street-smart, intelligent, friendly, whatever it is that makes you special or unique.
The Program calls that ‘terminally unique’ and that means it will kill you. Otherwise, the only three things guaranteed to drug/addicts-alcoholics are jails, institutions, and death.
Anyway, I said “you” for everything above. The truth is, that’s my story and that’s how I got lucky. Unfortunately, that’s just the beginning of a journey you won’t want to take. It requires real balls, not the fake courage used against others. You will learn humility when you don’t want to. You will be forced to accept things you don’t think are fair. You will be bored to tears at first, lots of things like that. And you may give yourself so many good reasons to give it all up, that you just may give it all up. Most do. Then it’s back to jails, institutions, incomprehensible demoralization, loneliness, abandonment, and death. It’s just more of the same, brother.
But if you do get the balls to hang in there, it will be worth it one hundred times over. You will find an existence that you never knew existed. It’s called happy, joyous and free, regardless of all the stuff happening around you called ‘life’.
There are three required things:
#1 Willingness:
If you ain’t willing or don’t have the courage to continue, you lose.
If you’re willing to stay the course, no matter what, you win.
#2 Open-mindedness: That means you have to listen and act on new ideas.
The truth is, your best thinking got you to where you are now and that’s not good.
That means you gotta throw it away because it’s mostly your enemy.
#3 Honesty: That’s self-honesty, not being honest about how you feel about someone.
