It was so confusing, a two-car accident, a van, a police officer on scene, an ambulance, a non-stop flight for us? It was too much!
Our heads were spinning, our little boy was seriously hurt, a head injury. We flew through the
12:30a.m: We were allowed to go see you after your surgeon gave us the news. You have suffered severe brain trauma and part of your skull had been removed. There was swelling. He went on and on and I bowed my head and sobbed. We walked into a room filled with your bed and machines. Our 6-foot 185- pound-strapping son was lying there. Your head was wrapped from your eyebrows up; an intubation tube was down your throat, an IV and a neck brace! Laura is your nurse and she made us feel very wanted in your room. She is tender and caring. She explained how keeping the pressure in your head down is a huge goal. By removing a piece of your skull your brain has room to swell. They removed some brain tissue. What have they left us? I wondered if you would make it through the night.
That is how the journey began. I began writing this very story as an outlet for my anger, for my confusion and for my brother. I don’t exactly know when I started writing down the words that you are now reading, but I know I am writing the words without the knowledge of how it will all end. I just pray that no matter what the end will be, that God will give my family the strength they need to travel this journey.
I am not the only one who is writing. My mother, who carried the burden of watching her only son struggle against death, wrote a private journal. I began this book with some of those private thoughts and I have included them throughout these pages. I am not sure how our journey with my brother, Joshua will end, I just know that it is hurting to travel this road.
