I’m Demus, David Cauthen’s guardian angel. Human destiny’s my business, my vigil. I work at it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
After God expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, He created us guardian angels to help watch over humans on earth, to accompany them on their mortal journeys. We are celestial spirits and live forever. Our existence was discovered by the Greeks, the great thinkers, before Christendom, early in mankind’s quest for answers to the secrets of life and of God’s purpose for humans. The Greeks called us daimons, not to be confused with our Satanical counterparts.
Each human being is unique. Part of him, his soul, pre-exists his biological birth, has a singular mortal life purpose. Some call that life’s purpose that person’s destiny. His body and soul are endowed by the Almighty with the abilities necessary to fulfill that destiny. The Maker assigns a guardian angel to spiritually accompany that person, the ward, through his mortal life, hopefully toward the ward’s fulfillment of that purpose.
The guardian angel is part of the soul as are the person’s spiritual heart, the will, and mind. The brain is the physical component of the soul.
The soul doesn’t respond to nor is it governed by the laws of physics or any other science. It isn’t guided by the principles of logic or reason, and it is not time-sensitive. The soul is eternal, a creation of God, and retains its unique identity from spiritual conception, through earthly life to physical death and throughout eternity.
After a person’s mortal death, his or her soul resides with other souls in one of two spiritual realms, one for the “blessed” souls and one for the “unblessed” souls.
One may not know or see his destiny. It usually takes some growing into, a lot of living experience. A person isn’t bound to his destiny and may choose to take a different path through life and depart from his life’s image and not fulfill his destiny.
The human spirit, the soul, has a free will and the power of choice. It is up to each person to strive to achieve his destiny by discovering, developing, and directing his spiritual and physical abilities, to “blaze his unique trail” in life. Each person’s thoughts, acts, and experiences are parts of one’s life’s journey, his trail, his way, toward fulfilling his life’s purpose.
That’s where I come in!
I serve as a guiding influence or instinct, working through the ward’s subconscious, to nudge him in the direction of identifying and fulfilling his or her Divine destiny.
Some learn their life’s purpose at a young age, before the age of mature thought. Humans call this “genius” and describe the person as “precocious,” “gifted,” or “a prodigy”.
Others see their life’s purpose later in life. Some learn it just before death. Some see false visions of life’s purpose and traipse off in the wrong direction. Later in life, they may see their real purposes and change courses toward fulfillment.
Sadly, some never discover their destiny, their life’s purpose.
How does a ward discover or fulfill his or her destiny?
“How do I know when I have fulfilled my destiny?” the ward repeatedly asks through life.

About the Book
What is your life’s purpose, your reason for being here, and how do you know what it is? Do you have a destiny, and, if so, how was that determined? How do you reach it? Are there choices, and if so, how does one make them? Is there a power which steers you down the right path toward your destiny, tells you which fork in the road to take? What difference in the grand scheme of things will your life make?
The author asked himself the same questions, over and over, throughout most of his seventy-seven years, and only recently has he learned the answers.
In When Destiny Comes to a Fork in the Road, Demus, the author’s guardian angel, describes the author’s thoughts, words, and actions as he travels down life’s road, seeking to discover his reason for being, his calling, his destiny. Share with him his happiness and sadness, emotions, indecision, uncertainty, discoveries, accomplishments, failures, his experiences, the people he met on his life’s journey and his quest to learn and to fulfill his destiny, and his eventual understanding of the meaning of his life.
About the Author
David Cauthen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1957 from Auburn University and a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1964 from the University of Alabama School of Law. He practiced trial law for thirty-eight years in Decatur and other areas in north Alabama and specialized during the latter years in domestic relations law. He retired from law practice in 2002 to devote full time to writing. In addition to When Destiny Comes to a Fork in the Road, he authored three legal thriller novels in the Penn Roman series, Absolute Justice, published in 2007, Thumbs Down published in 2011, and Conscious Disregard which will be published in the near future.
He and his wife, Barbara, live near Hartselle in North Alabama on a small horse farm.
