My stomach started to churn. I wanted to get up and run out the door. I kept telling myself, just a few more minutes.
“Noody has a great quartz collection. He’s told me about it, but I haven’t seen it all yet,” Hayden said.
I nudged him a little, as a reminder not to mention the nugget.
“Yes sir, I have a small collection. Mostly, it’s river rock,” I said.
The old man stopped rocking. He put the unlit pipe back in his pocket. Then he got up and wobbled over to us. I slid closer to Hayden. He slid closer to Megan.
I could see the hump on his back, as he leaned over us. His breath was warm and his face was wrinkled like a prune.
“Have you kids heard the legend of the Judaculla Rock?” he asked.
We all shook our heads.
“Do you want me to tell you about the Judaculla Rock?” he asked while pointing his long yellow nails at us.
I wanted to say no and run for my life.
“Yes, Mr. Keever,” Megan whispered and grabbed Hayden’s hand.
I couldn’t believe she said yes.

Pam Poland is an author and educator. She resides in High Point, North Carolina. She currently teaches fourth grade in Randolph County.
She graduated from High Point University and did graduate studies at the University of New Orleans.
