“I wish you girls could just leave me alone. If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a hundred times that I’m through with men. You think a woman can’t live without them. Maybe you can’t, but I certainly can. You’re the very ones who lined me up with Rocky and you know he was a miserable creep. You keep trying to tell me that all men are not alike, but I want you to know for sure that he’s the typical all American man.” Cara’s face was flushed and her blood pressure was running high. “All of you get out. I’ve got studying to do.”
June sat and waited for the head of steam to cool. She knew that Cara was too upset to study and she also realized that she hadn’t turned a page in five minutes. “You don’t have to have a date, but you do need to get out. You’ve hibernated here in this room for three months now. Don’t let one creep spoil your whole life. All our friends are going to be at the party Friday night. Please come with me. I won’t be able to enjoy the party knowing you’re here all alone.”
“Part of the group will be laughing behind my back and the others will be all sympathy. I don’t believe I could take it.”
“There’s going to be compassion there for sure, but nobody is going to be judgmental, and there’s going to be boys and girls there without dates, so you won’t be an odd ball. Please Cara, I’m begging, because I know it’ll be best for you and everybody. Those friends are not just trying to wart you, they’re really concerned.”
“I’ll think about it a few months from now.”
“If you don’t go, I won’t go. I couldn’t enjoy it anyhow, knowing you’re here all alone”
“If it’s going to bother you that much, I’ll consider it,” Cara tried to muster a smile.
After this bit of conversation she was able to get her mind partially back on the book. She was a remarkable girl with a personality, which drew people to her - that is before Rocky. The poise with which she carried her model body made her outstanding wherever she went. Her dark hair, which glittered auburn when struck by light, was fascinating. She had become a bit too thin - since Rocky.
The week rolled by rather slowly. June had told all the others to take the pressure off Cara, that she would handle the delicate situation.

June was very tactful and knew how to handle Cara. Friday evening they were both decked out in their party clothes and on the road. The girls were delighted to see Cara when they made their entry and all of them let her know it. The boys were eyeballing her and trying to get a conversation going. Phil was very much attracted to this beautiful creature and stayed as close as possible without being a nuisance. He refilled her glass and brought her sandwiches. There was no way she could brush him off or be rude, since he was such a gentleman. She had to admit to herself that he was handsome, with such lovely dark brown hair, a great physique and such a caring, considerate person. Finally she let herself be cornered by him.
“I haven’t seen you on campus. Are you an Aggie?” Phil wanted to know.
“Yes. I’m in accounting and computers. What’s your major?”
“I’m in Veterinary Medicine. We don’t get on campus much. We’re across the tracks. What class are you?”
“Ninety-one. And you?”
“Since we’re both in the same class, that gives us a little common ground, even though we are a bit distant in our studies. I’d like to see you again. How do I get in touch with you?”
“I haven’t had time for dating. I have to keep my head in the books.”

June thought she saw possibilities of a romantic spark, so she planned a small party including Cara and Phil as the only singles.
“Gosh, it''s good to see you. I haven’t been able to get you off my mind,” Phil told her.
“I’ll have to admit, you’ve crossed my mind a few times.”
Phil caught her hand and started a tender massage. Cara pulled away a little frigidly, “I’m sorry Phil. It isn’t you. I’ve just been hurt so badly, recently.”
He was gaining a bit of her respect and confidence as the evening progressed and she was warming a bit toward him.
“What do you think about three couples of us going out on the Brazos for a picnic Sunday afternoon?” Phil suggested.
“Well, maybe I’d better check my schedule.”
“I’ll check your schedule, but I don’t see
