He had his share of such confrontations during his tour in Europe when he served during WWI. He knew the fear and he knew the chances he was taking. Pedro was unarmed. Pedro walked away planning to leave with his son, Oscar.
“Turn around! Turn around, Escobedo!” yelled an embarrassed Josh Wilkens.
Pedro kept walking with his son. Wilkens fired a shot that hit near Oscar’s feet. Pedro turned around and pushed Oscar to the side. He walked away from Oscar to make sure his son was not in the line of fire.

Oscar ran out of the field and held his dying father as Josh Wilkens got into his car and turned it on. Sonny was crying in fear and stunned by what he had just seen. He kept looking out at Oscar through the car’s back window. Oscar could only see Sonny’s lips saying “Sorry” over and over again. Oscar’s tears turned to frozen hate in seconds.
