About the Author

Born in a small town in rural southern Indiana, Roberta R. Martin has been writing stories since age 9. She kept on writing  through her teen years  as a means of escape. As a result of this, Roberta earned writing awards in the Southern Indiana Poet’s and Writer’s Society. First Place in the Seventh through Ninth Grade Prose for a story entitled,  “Lori Goes Home”. She also received an Honorable Mention for poem entitled, “The Tree”. These works were locally published and were considered to be of a quality comparable to college-level work, though she could only compete in her own grade range.

She went on to publish in local papers, the “Parents Without Partners Newsletter”, and other works were published in her high school newspaper. Later in her life, after she married, she published two poems in a U.S. Navy newspaper in Glenview, Illinois. Her love of books continued as she volunteered at the Naval Air Station Glenview Illinois Base Library.

Roberta keeps on writing to this day, but has never had any of her works published professionally until her husband of seventeen years, Nick Martin, saw an ad for Authorhouse and helped her to decide to self-publish her first professional work, “The Lighthouse Brigade – Book One, The Journey Home”. Both Roberta and Nick currently reside in Newport News, Virginia, where her husband is  completing his twenty year career. They have plans to retire and settle in their hometown in Southern Indiana.

This book is the first in a series of three written to entertain their foster children and is dedicated to her mother, Sue, who once asked Roberta a question of what would happen to the children if no one was there to guide them. The Lighthouse Brigade is Mrs. Martin’s answer to the question.
