We soon noticed that as the shoreline and fish went swimming by, so did a good portion of the day. We did not have a watch to note time with, but it was obvious to us both that the sun was getting closer to the western horizon, and we decided it might be a good time to pull over, dock our newfound possession, and begin the walk back home. Besides, we were both getting a little bit hungry! It did not take us long to realize that we might have a little problem. Once we got our wood plank out of the water and safely pulled free of the currents of the river, Yogi discovered that he was not able to smell anything that was close to anywhere we had ventured to before. A quick scan of the countryside revealed a large steel bridge spanning the river not a quarter of a mile to our south, a bridge that I soon recognized as the one that my grandfather had driven us over on one of the many trips we took when we inspected the county roads, as was his duty as a county commissioner. We climbed up on a bank that was a little higher than the rest of the land around the bridge and determined that this bridge was only a short distance from Highway 11. Highway 11 ran only two miles from our farm, but I also remembered that this bridge was far enough away from our farm that you generally had time enough to hear three or four songs on the radio before you got to it. Using that God-given ability to relate time and distance to the speed that a car travels down the highway, I was able to deduct that this bridge was about sixteen miles from our farm as the crow flies. Yogi looked at me as if to say, “Boy are you in trouble,” as he put his head down and began walking in the direction of the highway—a highway that ended up taking us almost half an hour to get to.

About the Author
John grew up on the family farm and worked on his uncle’s ranch in the 1960s and early ’70s. He left his home state of John and Melissa then spent five years working in a family-owned construction business, leaving it to work for a leading company in the gaming industry for thirteen years. During this time they had the pleasure of working and living in They have also been fortunate to serve the Lord on three short-term mission trips in John has maintained the passion for fishing that he developed as a child and that he talks about in his first book. He has enjoyed traveling in pursuit of the next catch, but will leave the writing about fishing for the experts. John’s best friend Yogi was irreplaceable, and John has not had a dog like him since. John and Melissa have developed an attachment to cats, although they don’t really enjoy swimming as much as Yogi did. Utilizing a compassion for people and a desire to serve God, they hope to continue serving in a ministry that will help people to achieve the abundant life we were all created to live.
