So there you are in the mall and someone stops you, only to tell you that you have the look and/or walk and can easily become a model. They proceed by giving you a card and telling you that they have an audition they want you to come too. After agreeing you come out to meet them only to find out that they not only like you but also want to work with you. After showing you all the clients they represent and the commercial ads they’ve done, you become impress and are ready to move. They ask you how serious are you about a career in modeling. You enthusiastically tell them I am ready to go all the way. After agreeing to all their terms and conditions you sign your life away which allows them to charge you almost $1000 to put your pictures on the internet to show their clients, not guaranteeing you any work or evidence of any future jobs. Not stopping there, they also go as far as to tell you, that you must pay a bi-monthly charge to maintain your pictures on their internet, whether you get a job or not. Mistake #1
This is one of the biggest and most costly scams one will run into in the fashion business.
Rule #1 if a modeling agency wants you and desires to work for you, they will pick up all the cost to promote you. All you have to do is come to one of their open calls and if they’re interested they will contact you and prep you up most of the times free of charge. Remember if you have to pay it usually means walk away. A brief history lesson, whether its boxing, basketball, tennis etc. the sole purpose of an agent or agencies is to work hard on your behalf, not seeing a dime until you have seen a quarter. Never lose focus on that concept….IT DOESN’T CHANGE!
There are more agencies out here that are out for your money and not you then you may think. I can not tell you the ones to avoid but I can tell you the words, signs, and red flags to beware of, and remember AGENCIES GET PAID WHEN YOU GET PAID. NOT BEFORE.

About the Author
I first met Sherard at the vibe magazine fashion shoot in the winter of 2000 and immediately I was drawn in at how focused and business minded this young supermodel was. Not only did he have the total look of a high fashion model but he had the mind set of a seasoned business executive. He approached the Fashion world with a flair totally unseen like a man on a misson or a student soaking up as much knowledge as he could. Asking the right questions knowing exactly how to move on an off the runway seemed to be second nature to him. So when i found out that he had written a book about his 9 years experience in the Fashion world I really wasn''t surprized, I just had to ask him what truly inspired him to write this masterpiece? After sitting down with him this is what I was able to find out. Sherard has been a high fashion model for 9yrs appearing and various magazines such as Vibe, Slam Magazine, Being Single, and even Jet Magazine. He has appeared in many videos such as R.
