Several assumptions about Christian pastors guide my ideas. The pastor is initially a highly motivated, dedicated person, willing to grow and to learn; the pastor must correlate self-perceptions with role perceptions (job expectations), as any professional. The pastor is different from other professionals, however, because theological and subjective factors characterize the pastor’s experience. Pastoral support systems must consider these factors.
Most pastors will never make it “big,” in a secular sense. The majority will respond to a “call to the pastorate” and will sail into the sea of pastoral adventure. They will participate in the proclamation of the Christian gospel, work with an optimism that arises from a personal trust in God; they will leave the world a better place because of their pastoral work. These essays aspire to encourage those persons.

In The Christian Pastor’s Work, Dr. Donald Corley asserts: Christian movement exists within human history as part of natural social processes. The interaction between Christian theology and society is a perennial arena in which pastors work. Part I contains autobiographical data that establish the author’s credentials. In Part IV the author proposes several Components of a Pastoral Model, interpolated from the educational and psychiatric fields Because intellectual criticism is one of the tensions contemporary pastors face, and because Friederich Nietzsche has been a critic of Christianity, Part V offers a series of essays related to some of Nietzsche’s criticisms. Part VI is a series of brief essays about specific aspects of a Christian pastor’s work.
